A Catalyst for a thriving mitchell county

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH COLLABORATION: BUILDING COMMUNITY COMMONS

We envision a vibrant hub where the Mitchell County Food Pantry, Beloit Senior Center, and Auxiliary Economy Shop thrive under one roof. Picture a welcoming space with a commercial kitchen churning out hot meals, an open classroom buzzing with activity, and volunteers sorting donations and supporting their fellow neighbors. This is the transformative power of Community Commons.

By consolidating resources and fostering collaboration, Community Commons will revolutionize the way Mitchell County serves its residents. The centralized location will not only increase accessibility but also create a welcoming environment and opportunity for volunteer cross-training. Senior citizens will find a space for social interaction, volunteer opportunities, health education, and nutritious meals. Families facing food insecurity will have a dignified and convenient place to access essential resources. By centralizing resources, we can unleash the full potential of our dedicated staff and volunteers, allowing them to provide tailored assistance and introduce new innovative ideas and programming

This proposed community building would be a one-stop location to meet several needs of individuals and their families. it is a challenge for some to get out and around, especially to multiple locations spread across town. Going to one location would surely benefit! With multiple volunteers working together in one space, more collaborative work can be done. No doubt the proposed community building will be an incredible asset to the community!

The current space that the Food Pantry occupies does not have restroom facilities, A/C, or an antiquated heat system. There is no water source to facilitate cleaning the freezers, and refrigerator, or to clean up any messes. It is hard to maintain volunteers in the summer due to the heat and also compromises the quality of the food. Last year we gave out 201 baskets and vouchers totaling well over $44,000. This does not include the fresh & frozen items or miscellaneous items in addition to the over 60 Angel Tree baskets given at Christmas time.

The proposed community building will be a tremendous asset to our community. As our population ages and the needs of our communities continue to grow, having appropriate, accessible space for our Beloit Senior Center, Economy Shop, Food Pantry, and more is becoming increasingly important. This project will also help streamline the number of volunteers currently needed to run all these entities which are located across town.

Commitment  & Progress

We have made significant progress that demonstrates our unwavering commitment to making Community Commons a reality. We have invested considerable time, effort, and local support into this transformative project, and we are confident in its positive impact on Mitchell County.

community collaboration

We have established a robust Community Commons stakeholder team that includes representation from not just the Senior Center, Economy Shop, and Food Pantry, but also includes Economic Development, Healthcare, Planning Commission, City of Beloit, and others to ensure broad community buy-in and long-term success.

financial investment

Through dedicated fundraising efforts, we have already secured $250,000 towards the project's total cost and are fully pursuing additional opportunities.

site secured

We have strategically chosen & secured a prime location for the facility. The lot is located on the corner of 20th St. and N. Walnut St, directly west of Beloit Jr/Sr High School and north of Mitchell County Sheriff's Dept. & Beloit Police Dept building. This location puts the site near the school, Trojan Stadium, the Early Learning Center, the future Solomon Valley Transportation Hub, North Campus Walking Trail, Community Gardens, Port Library, NCK Wellness Center, and more.

Detailed Planning

Formal layouts and comprehensive plans have been developed, senuring a functional and efficient design.

Sustainable model

A comprehensive business model, including organizational agreements, is being established to guarantee the project's long-term financial viability.
